Saying Goodbye to Mrs Harper!

Today was Mrs Harper’s last day as Headteacher of Portfield School. Mrs Harper has been at Portfield School for many years as Deputy Headteacher and in recent years as acting Headteacher and Headteacher.

Today is a sad day in saying goodbye to Mrs Harper, although we have all enjoyed celebrating her retirement. Monday was very memorable and all pupils enjoyed a picnic with fair rides and music on the school field – lots of fun for all!

We would all like to wish Mrs Harper all the best in her retirement – we will all miss you very much, but we hope that you enjoy doing all the things that you love and remember to come back to see us from time to time.

♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦

Thankyou and Farewell to Mrs Thomas-Cleaver!

A huge thank you to Mrs Thomas-Cleaver who is retiring this year. Mrs Thomas-Cleaver has been the Chair of Governors for 16 years and part of the governing body of Portfield School for over 30 years.

Over the years Mrs Thomas-Cleaver has been part of many changes and seen the growth of Portfield School.

We are very grateful to Mrs Thomas-Cleaver for all of the time that she has dedicated to school and her unswerving dedication to ensuring that we are the best that we can be.

Thank you Mrs Thomas-Cleaver, we wish you well in your retirement.

An Integrated Autism Service for Wales – What will it mean for me?

This week the Minister for Health and Social services announced an additional investment of £7 million to support the development of the Integrated Autism service for Wales. This takes the total funding for the service up to a total of £13 million.

Why are we developing an Integrated Autism Service?

Because autistic individuals, parents and carers told us they needed more support. They told us they can’t access services because they don’t meet the eligibility criteria. They told us they wanted support with:

  • Behaviour issues
  • Emotional issues such as anxiety and anger
  • Developing social and daily living skills
  • Accessing leisure and recreational activities

We learned that autistic adults and children and their family’s lives are severely affected because they can’t access the correct support, that many can’t leave the house on a daily basis and that parents and carers feel highly stressed.

We also heard that many adults who think they may have autism find it difficult to access an assessment for this.

What will the service provide?

The service will provide diagnostic assessment for autistic adults (sometimes jointly with other services), support and advice for children, adults and those who support them.

I am a parent of an autistic child – what will this mean for me?

The integrated autism service will support parents and carers by provide advice and support, signposting to other services and delivering programmes for young people. This will include support and advice to help manage difficulties such as:

  • Sleep problems
  • Issues with eating
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Anxiety
  • Developing social skills

Where needed, the service may also work with other staff involved with your child such as school staff or health visitors to make sure you and your child are given consistent support and advice.

Parents and carers will be able to self – refer to the service (we heard that needing professionals to refer you for support is not working for you).

I am an autistic adult – what will this mean for me?

You will be able to get support from the service without needing to be referred by someone else. Staff in the service will be able to provide you with support and advice in relation to

  • Anxiety
  • Social skills
  • Accessing leisure and recreational activities
  • Developing your daily living skills (such as paying bills, shopping and cooking)
  • Accessing other services such as healthcare or employment support
  • Or other difficulties with you may be experiencing

If you are an adult and think you have autism but don’t have a diagnosis, the service will be able to offer you an assessment for autism if you want it.

Will the service provide everything for us?

No, the service will not provide:

  • Emergency / crisis intervention
  • Respite care
  • Rapid response

For those with more complex needs (where other services such as mental health support is needed), staff from the integrated autism service will work with other professionals to ensure they are able to provide ‘autism-friendly’ support.

How has this worked in other places?

We do not believe there is an all age, National service anywhere else in the World. We are very excited about it. The Welsh Government have listened to what autistic individuals and their parents and carers told us they needed to improve their day to day lives and have invested the funding needed to deliver it.

We have another unique resource in Wales – our team! We are supporting the creation of the integrated autism service, developing new resources to help autistic individuals and parents / carers, and working hard to improve awareness and understanding of autism across Wales.

Why is it taking so long?

We need to get it right. We need to make sure that all services are working together. We need to make sure we have the right staff to support you. We need to make sure staff are trained to have the skills needed to support you.

Unfortunately, this takes time but please be assured that we are working as hard as we can to get the service ready for you. The service should be active across the whole of Wales by the end of the year.

How will I know when the service is open and how to access it?

We will keep you updated via our website www.ASDinfoWales.co.uk, and via Twitter and Facebook – ASDinfoWales. We will also make sure that schools, GPs and voluntary organisations are aware.

How can I access ASDinfoWales resources in the meantime?

Email us at ASDinfo@WLGA.gov.uk or inbox us on Facebook and Twitter, let us know what you need. We will try our best to get it to you.

5 to Thrive training at Portfield School

Mrs Truswell, Mrs Harries and Mrs Rothery prepared a workshop and presentation for staff from Portfield, SNAP , Monkton and Glannau Gwaun Learning Resource Centres and delivered a very interesting presentation today.

5 to Thrive is all about how positive interaction with others helps children’s brains to grow and enable them to be healthy, confident learners and develop into sociable, resilient adults.

This training builds on staff awareness developed through previous training on attachment and emotion coaching. It was well received by all.

Many thanks to the team for an interesting and professional delivery.

Painting of Carew Castle

Following a recent educational trip to Carew Castle, students from Taskers 1 Satellite class contacted the VC Gallery in Haverfordwest asking if they were able to come into the studio and recreate Carew Castle for the school heritage project.

Barry John (MBE) was delighted with the request and over the next few sessions, he and Pete worked with our students teaching them new skills such as blending, colour mixing and creating a setting/ atmosphere.

All students photographed their favourite places when at Carew castle and reproduced individual pieces of art work as well as an amazing painting of Carew castle.

Barry was so impressed with the outcome of the painting that he asked if he could display it in his gallery over the Easter holiday.

The painting is now hung pride of place in Taskers 1 classroom.

Portfield School’s Career Day

Portfield Careers Fayre 2018 was a great success.

We had 25 stalls with representatives from many different colleges, Careers, supported work placements, parent partnership, therapists etc, offering a huge range of information to pupils and parents and carers about provision that is available for young people with Additional Learning Needs of Year 9  and above in and around the county and beyond.

It was great to hear so many parents, carers and young people saying how interesting and useful the day was and how much they had found out.

A really massive Thank You to everyone who came and set up an information stall, to those who came to find out and to our fabulous team at Portfield who made it all happen.

Some of our pupils will be walking around the school field and others will be walking around the court yard of Upper School – everybody will be doing something to raise funds to purchase a Defibrillator for school.
We are completing this alongside the British Heart Foundation Awareness month. Please feel free to send any donations in to school – as always your support is very much appreciated.

Portfield School ‘Recycle a Mascot’

We are thrilled to announce that Portfield School has won first prize in LNG's "Recycle a Mascot" competition. We had a great time making a tree out of recycled materials - an old umbrella stand, recycled packaging and cardboard of all descriptions. The students enjoyed exploring the sensory properties of the materials and together we assembled a tree which represents our school woodland area and the abundance of trees on and around our school grounds. Well done Portfield School!

⇒⇒⇒⇒A Midsummer Night’s Dream ⇐⇐⇐⇐

This year Portfield drama students are performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Torch Theatre, Milford Haven on Tues. 7th November. There are 21 students from Key Stage 4 and 5 taking part and they have been busy with rehearsals since returning to school in September. It is an amazing opportunity for our students to perform in a real theatre and gain skills that can be used in their future life.

Here are a few staff members, there are quite a few more out there lost in the crowds!

Good luck guys, we’re hoping that the weather forecast is wrong and that you will all stay dry today!!

‘John is an intelligent, experienced performer, with a unique stage presence and a voice like no other’

Originally from Bridgend, South Wales, John has performed on stage at various venues and cities in the UK (London, Bristol, Cardiff) and across the world (USA, Argentina). Specialising in both original material and the reworking of old favourites, his music can suit all needs and occasions.

A singer, supplemented by both his guitar and piano playing skills, he is a quick learner; he can play almost anything requested. John also uses a loop pedal, which adds to his performance to no end.

John recently came second in the Open Mic UK Awards and won Best Original Track. He was also accepted onto television show The Voice this Autumn.
